Elizabeth Velan, DMD, MSD

Dr. Elizabeth grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and completed her undergraduate degree at Portland State University.  She earned her Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry from Oregon Health and Science University in 2004. She then completed a two year certificate in treating medically complex adults a the University of Washington Graduate Residency Program prior to completing her Masters in Dentistry and Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Washington.

Since graduating, she has worked as a dental provider at Seattle Children's Hospital and as the Graduate Program Director for the University of Washington Pediatric Dentistry Program. Although Dr. Velan enjoyed academics, she issued her original drive to become a pediatric dentist, establishing a relationship with families and having the privilege of observing children transform into young adults. She continues to teach pediatric dental residents at Seattle Children's Hospital.

Dr. Elizabeth has been a Diplomate (Board Certified) of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry for over ten years.

Dr. Elizabeth strives to make every dental experience as positive as possible. She believes the best approach to oral health is to maximize prevention – but if restorative dental care is needed, we may have behavioral management options tailored to an individual family's needs.

Dr. Elizabeth and her husband Tomas have two children. Together they enjoy kids soccer, swimming, hiking and cooking. She gets away from it all in her garden or curled up with a book.

Dr. Elizabeth was recognized by the Seattle Met as a Top Dentist for 2017.

Kari Sims, DDS, MSD, MPH

Dr. Kari Sims is a board certified pediatric dentist and she is excited to be joining the Seattle Pediatric Dentists team! She embraces the idea that dentists are the oral health specialists within the medical community and that they have the obligation to work towards a goal of overall health in the patients they serve. She prides herself in creating an environment where children can gain confidence and learn to enjoy coming to the dentist. Her other interests include lifelong oral health, the relationship between mothers’ oral health and their children’s oral health, and the prevention and treatment of early childhood tooth decay for all children.

Dr. Sims was initially drawn to dentistry as it was a career that could combine her love of health, science, and art.  She received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. During her time in dental school, she recognized her passion in working with children and their families.  With that, she was accepted to the competitive pediatric dentistry program at the University of Washington where she graduated as a specialist in pediatric dentistry. Concurrently, she received her second specialty in public health at the highly regarded UW School of Public Health.

As a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry she strives to uphold the highest standards of care for her patients.  On top of working at Seattle Pediatric Dentists, Dr. Sims is an affiliate faculty member at the University of Washington and is a Pediatric Dentist at both the Seattle Children’s Hospital’s Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic and the Puyallup Tribal Health Authority.  Dr. Sims is an active member of her local, state, and national pediatric and general dental associations.

When not working to maintain and restore the health of children’s smiles, Dr. Sims enjoys spending time with her husband, Nima, and their daughter.

Meet Our Team!

Our primary asset is our talented and friendly staff...

Your child’s appointment will be comfortable and enjoyable because of the extensive training our team has received and the relaxed environment that we have created.

We cultivate a relationship with each of our patients, which not only ensures better children’s dental care, but also turns a visit with our doctors and team into a visit between friends.  Our team members look forward to enjoying a long-term relationship with both you and your children.

  • We take special notes on each child during the visit.

  • We care about what techniques work the best for your child.

  • We create an atmosphere of collaboration with parents, making sure you have a clear understanding of the treatment, follow-up, and solutions to your child’s dental health.

  • We believe in continuing education and as we keep ourselves up-to-date we will also keep you up-to-date on the latest equipment and techniques used to treat your children.

Your scheduled appointment time has been reserved specifically for you. We request 48-hours notice if you need to cancel your appointment. A cancellation fee will be charged if less than 48 hours notice is given.

Our office is committed to helping you maximize your insurance benefits. Because insurance policies vary, we can only estimate your coverage in good faith but cannot guarantee coverage due to the complexities of insurance contracts. Your estimated patient portion must be paid at the time of service. If you have any questions, our courteous staff is always available to answer them.

Financial Information

Your treatment plan will include a breakdown of all applicable fees, and we will inform you of all costs before treatment is administered. Charges are payable at the time of treatment.

We accept payments by cash, checks, and all major credit cards. Please ask a member of our staff, and we will review our payment options to accommodate your financial needs. If special arrangements are needed, please talk to our office manager prior to receiving service.

Although we participate with most major dental insurances, it is difficult to participate in all insurances.  We welcome you to our office even If we are out of network with your insurance.  With many out of network plans, there is often little or no difference in the out of pocket expense going out of network with our office. We are happy to discuss all of these options with you.

First Visit to Our Office

During your child’s first visit to our office, we want to take the time to get acquainted and gather information. This includes getting to know you and your child building a friendship with them while doing a thorough examination. Depending on your child’s age we could possibly take digital x-rays we feel may be required to make a complete diagnosis. At this time we will also discuss with you the nature of any dental care if necessary.

Please print and fill out our New Patient Forms.
Bring them with you at first appointment, Thank You.

What is a Pediatric Dentist?

A Pediatric Dentist like Dr. Dupuis, Dr. Elizabeth and Dr. Sims is a specialist dedicated to the oral health of children and the monitoring of their facial growth and development. Our office is designed for treating children from infancy through adolescence, as well as the medically and the physically compromised. In our opinion, taking your child to see a pediatric dental specialist is as important as taking them to see a pediatrician.

What is a Board Certified

Pediatric Dentist?

When a Pediatric Dentist is Board Certified it means that the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry or ABPD certifies that the dental care being provided is based on standards of excellence that lead to high quality oral health care for infants, children, adolescents and patients with special health care needs. Certification by the ABPD provides assurance to the public that a Pediatric Dentist like Dr. Dupuis, Dr. Elizabeth and Dr. Sims has successfully completed accredited training and a voluntary examination process designed to continually validate the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to the delivery of quality patient care.

Establishing Your Child’s Dental Home

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry encourages parents and other care providers to help every child establish a dental home by 12 months of age. Establishing a dental home provides some key components to dental care for your child including...

• Comprehensive oral health care including acute care and
preventive services.

• Individualized preventive dental health program based upon a
caries-risk assessment.

• Anticipatory guidance regarding growth and development.

• Plan for acute dental trauma (emergencies).

• Dietary counseling.

• Referrals to dental specialists when care cannot directly be provided within the dental home.

• Referral at an age determined by patient, parent,
and pediatric dentist.

We’re proud of what people are saying about our office!
